Well, it's finally here. After all the hype and false launch dates on all the tech blogs, Facebook 3.0 for the iPhone is now here. I'll have to say that my original feelings about this update are: WOOT!! YAY!! YIPPEE!! PRAISE JEEBUS!!! It is by far the most extensive update to an iPhone app I've seen thus far, and they certainly made the wait worth it. We're just going to touch on some of the major feature updates here.
The first new look you'll see is the new dashboard. From here you can pretty much access any area of your account. The new look is awesome and the functionality is even more awesome, or awesome-er, or whatever. You can add quick links to friends' profiles, fan pages, your own pages, etc. Moving the icons around requires the same press, hold, wiggle, as the screentouches on the iPhone dashboard. Personally, this is our favorite new feature on the update.

Let's move on. The News Feed still provides the same information except much prettier and more screen real estate due to removing the four buttons at the bottom and including them in the dashboard instead. The biggest feature update to the newsfeed is the filter dropdown. Seen below it adds the ability to filter by network and family to the original status updated, photos, links, etc.

The Friends icon shows you, guess what, your friends, but a major feature addition on this update is the ability to SMS or call directly by pressing the telephone handset icon (how much longer until a telephone handset icon becomes irrelevant?). Pressing the icon will reveal up to 3 buttons for "Land", "Mobile", and "SMS" depending on what your friend has listed on their account. There's some additional information listed on your friends profile info page as well, including how many friends they have themselves.

Some other major features included in 3.0 are that you can now view and update fan pages, view and update events, view birthdays for the entire year, and use the entire app in landscape. The addition of being able to update fan pages that you administer will certainly be helpful for power users like us and others with multiple pages. And there's no doubt that horizontal usage will make it a lot easier to use for us fat thumbed fuckers across the world.
It is our opinion that an iPhone app should be as usable as a desktop application, not an extension of, and Facebook 3.0 app certainly succeeds at that. All in all, this update is extremely impressive and shows that Facebook is looking to increase it's hold on the social network market share. Before this app, Twitter was much more mobile-friendly, but this update will certainly place the momentum firmly in Facebook's court.
