Touchdown Jesus Destroyed by Lightning Bolt

In Monroe, Ohio a 62-foot-tall statue of Jesus Christ was struck by lightning and went up in flames Monday night. The statue was built in 2004 by the Solid Rock Church beside Interstate 75 at a cost of $250,000. Made of a steel frame covered with plastic foam and fiberglass, the roadside statue went up in a blaze after being hit by a bolt of lightning. The bishop of the nondenominational church said the statue wasn't created to impress people, but to help them. Is it just me, or are there much better ways of helping people with two hundred fifty thousand dollars than building a tacky statue?

Driver Flees From Cops Then Jumps Fence Into Prison

Cleveland police pulled over 20-year-old Ricky Flowers II for a routine traffic stop. Ole' Ricky decided he was having none of that and led police on a chase. Driving through residential neighborhoods reaching speeds in excess of 90 mph his vehicle finally came to a stop. Flowers and his passenger bailed from the car and ran towards a large fence. Flowers made it over while his buddy got tasered before getting to the top. Flowers though he was home free, until he realized the fence he scaled was to a women's prison yard. Nice work.

Ohio Appeals Court: No Speeding Tickets for Fast Sounding Cars

On October 18, 2007, Patrolman Ken Roth ticketed Daniel Freitag for speeding. Pretty normal, right? Well, Roth claimed that he could hear Freitag's Lincoln Navigator speeding. Roth used his highly trained super-sonic hearing to help make the assessment that Freitag was in fact going 42 mph in a 35 mph zone. Freitag has been fighting this ticket in the court system since then, and has just now won his case.

"As it approached I could hear the vehicle on the roadway which based on my training and experience it is consistent with a vehicle that was in excess of the posted speed limit," Roth testified.

"In weighing the evidence and all reasonable inferences and considering the credibility of the witnesses, we conclude that this presents the exceptional case, where the evidence weighs heavily in favor of Freitag," Judge Donna J. Carr wrote for the court. "The weight of the evidence does not support the conclusion that Freitag was exceeding the posted speed limit, specifically because Patrolman Roth's testimony that he audibly and visibly determined that Freitag was speeding is not credible... It is simply incredible, in the absence of reliable scientific, technical, or other specialized information, to believe that one could hear an unidentified vehicle 'speeding' without being able to determine the actual speed of the vehicle."

It's a good thing we all own silent cars here at TIFR. The cyborg officers and their super-hearing will never catch us!
